The Blind Atheist:
The Unscientific Root of Atheism
By Raymond F. Hendrix
The Blind Atheist is a book for the open minded skeptic. If you are an atheist or agnostic that prefers proof to faith then you may want to explore the scientific evidence contained in the book. Exposing ideas that chaos theory and self organization are viable alternatives to intelligent design as mere wishful thinking, the facts presented within the pages of The Blind Atheist make clear that theism is the default position and not atheism. DNA, the "RNA world", the genetic code, and so called "junk DNA" is explored in the book along with the assertions of Richard Dawkins and other notable atheists. The information based machinery of life cannot come into existence without intelligent input at some point. The Blind Atheist shows why the intelligent input is necessary for even the most primitive nasent life form that may be postulated to come into existence, and why alternative scenarios that exclude intelligent intervention are absurd. The main assertions made in the book can be either confirmed or disproved by scientific means without appeal to a supernatural source. The reader will find that modern atheism is based on a speculative myth.

The process of evolution is discussed in the book but only as it pertains to the origin of life and the gathering of information. The book is a must read response to Richard Dawkins' book; The Blind Watchmaker. His famous "biomorphs" become fallen branches and his widely hailed "me thinks it is like a weasel" experiment becomes an exercise in intelligent design as the flaws are exposed in The Blind Atheist. A short book that deals with the root, The Blind Atheist nevertheless provides the material that can be used to upset several present day scientific assumptions. Once the foundation is destroyed then the entire building collapses. The Blind Atheist does however leave the reader with some hope. The hope is that educators who read this book will return to a fact based scientific foundation without the need to interject the myths of atheism into scientific curriculum. The book is available in paperback and also in an inexpensive electronic format here. It is also available at Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com below, and at book stores everywhere. Excerpt from the chapter, Abiogenesis:
...What all of this means is that de Duve (along with many similar theorists) is proposing the following:

The specific detailed instructions that are necessary for the operation of the machinery of the cell in all of its complexity (which we have not touched here) arose by natural means without the intervention or aid of an intelligent source. He is seriously suggesting that established laws of science are not to be considered at all. Nowhere in his paper does he hint at any problem with regard to this information arising by natural means. He is entirely consumed with a series of chemical reactions that completely ignore the very foundation of life. This error can be found in virtually all such papers written by supposedly learned scientists. This is like designing a car and forgetting about the engine, transmission and the wheels. What possible use is there for a theoretical string of remote possibilities when there is absolutely no consideration given to the essential parts?

Some here think that I am crazy because they will say that he did consider the essential parts by focusing the paper on the "evolution" of RNA, DNA, and proteins. So I suppose we have no choice but to turn to the next chapter.

From the chapter, Snow Flakes and DNA:
...Where now are the laws of physics? They have not been violated at all. They are simply irrelevant to this foundational portion of the life process upon which the rest of the operation of life rests.

Where did these minutely detailed precise instructions come from? How does each cell know what portion of the book to open to at any given time? It does no good for the glass maker to read about making an elevator. The crane operator needs to read about the weight loads he will be carrying but he couldn’t care less about how you make steel. The information in DNA, that is used in very specific ways and at the precise times necessary, cannot be explained by the laws of physics. We need another law before we can even hope to understand the origin of information like this. Snowflakes and interesting patterns and order in nature do nothing to help us here. Snowflakes and salt crystals do not give this type of instruction. Remember these instructions can be read, translated, understood and used to build a human being or a tree or a hummingbird or any animal or plant you can think of...

From the chapter, The Foundation of All Life is the Written Word:

...Precisely timed release of certain chemicals causes the RNA to be cut at just the right places. In other parts of the cell these pieces are sometimes spliced back together or formed with precisely made proteins into other components. Those components help in the translation of the code that is interpreted by biological machines by way of other coded instructions into the actual work of making proteins. These unique proteins and enzymes are manufactured according to the strict instructions from a selection of 20 amino acids which themselves provide an endless possibility of combinations similar to the possibilities contained in the English alphabet. Nothing is possible without the information. The cell can do nothing without it except die. All of the processes in the cell are interdependent with each other and they all depend on the information and the precise instructions given by the DNA and by other means.

The cell is like a machine of life. Parts of the machine can be altered and it will still work to some extent, and people can purposely change some of the information in the DNA but the point is that there must be some logic to it. It definitely is not just a mindless code that can be ordered randomly. And it certainly is not just a disordered jumble of proteins that simply react according to the laws of thermodynamics. They do of course react precisely according to those laws but only as they are shielded and directed in those chemical reactions by the unique order dictated by the information. In other words, the proteins that are manufactured are not allowed to simply float about looking for a function or a random chemical reaction to engage in anymore than an automatic transmission is simply a box full of gears that are randomly thrown into a metal case.

Some have speculated that life began with RNA instead of DNA. One reason for this assumption is that it is between some of the main functions of the life process. The idea is that DNA initially copied from RNA and eventually took on a role of its own. Here is a brief description of the process...

From the chapter, Intelligent Intervention:
...In his later programs he, the creator [Richard Dawkins], added more lines of symmetry and thereby was able to "create" various things that looked like snowflakes. Of course we already know how snowflakes and naturally forming crystals come about in nature so we should not be surprised that Richard Dawkins was able to simulate those laws of nature. Take away the artificially created symmetry and we are left with an interesting simulation of exactly what he programmed into the machine. He, the creator, also programmed into the experiment the ability to branch off from a single line. This is necessary because he, the creator, knew that trees branch off that way. Should it really come as any surprise then that some of his biomorphs looked like trees?

They would of course look nothing like trees even with the branching mechanism if he did not program in the symmetry function. His trees would look more like fallen branches but I don’t think that would be as impressive to the unwary reader. He also programmed in segmentation because he, the creator, knew that segmentation was a part of nature. How the blind watchmaker knew that is unknown, but the seeing watchmaker, Richard Dawkins, did know, so he programmed that into the natural selection experiment himself.

Now, let’s ignore all of the above and pretend that everything was done the way it should have been and these creatures magically appeared on the computer screen. What has he proved? Is this even remotely similar to the intricate and complicated mechanism contained in a living organism? Richard Dawkins created a program that draws abstract pictures much as a cloud will form itself into a familiar looking object from time to time. He proved absolutely nothing in regard to natural selection and how it operates in nature...

...We are talking here about the laws of thermodynamics controlling the socalled "replication" of still lifeless macromolecules. How do those laws cause one molecule to be selected over another based upon the specific information content of one over the other (especially when we consider that the theorized nascent life must select this information with foreknowledge of the code and yet to be determined translation mechanism)? Mindless molecules are attracted and formed according to the laws of physics with regard to atomic structure. There is no consideration of specified, coded information content at all, is there? And there is no information in them to begin with, is there?

Again we are left with the necessity of value judgments. So the program itself is flawed if it assumes natural selection to be in effect when there is no existing advantage to work from. The entire experiment is directed from beginning to end by the intelligent input of Richard Dawkins. It neither confirms abiogenesis or natural selection and it certainly does not eliminate the need for intelligent intervention. It is useless without the assumption of foreknowledge. Everything was perfectly prepared to prove that nobody needed to prepare anything in order for life to form and evolve from lifeless matter...

From the last chapter:
...The machinery must exist before the information can exist. And the string of DNA is useless unless it is correctly translated by preexisting translation machinery. The code is manifest by way of specified enzymes that contain information themselves. This information is coordinated with the string of DNA so that the correct three-letter words are used at the correct time and place. So we must not only have the DNA in the exact order but the enzymes used in translation must be in a specified order to correctly manifest the information. I must also say here that these enzymes (with names like tRNA, rRNA, RNA polymerase etc.) must be of the correct shape. Like a puzzle that fits together these information carrying enzymes fit with the appropriate part in the machinery and transfer the information to another part of the machine that is prepared with the appropriate shape and information content to receive it. The code, the shapes, the information and the logistics necessary to coordinate the process and assemble the fragile parts must exist before life can even begin.

So the miracle of life must begin with a string of miracles in order to communicate the code to all of the parts of the translating machinery and in order to ensure that the correct information is used. As you can see the omission or insertion of even one letter in either the DNA or the translation machinery makes the instructions useless. The code itself came from somewhere? Where? The code was communicated to the appropriate parts of the translation machinery so that it knew what it was translating. Who did this? One miracle is not enough. We must have hundreds of miracles coming together at precise times and places in order to even produce the translation of the code!
