This CLASSIC piece of recapitulationist embryology has just earned RetroSpector his SECOND Hamster Brain of the Week nomination. So far this week's contedt will pit ReteoSpector against dales.
(I was going to include dales in the first HBOTW contest but forgot so I'm including her in this weeks
contest.)

But it's the same two bones, and they had clearly been doing double duty (accoustical and jaw function) for some time down the series.
The embryological evidence on this is exactly parallel, also.  In mammalian embryos today what start out looking like extra jaw bones migrate to the ear and become ear bones.  This kind of thing happens a lot.  I've already mentioned hatchling insects and the fossil evidence that arthropods arose from lobopod worms.

Hatchling frogs look like fish.  The fossil evidence says that amphibians arose from fish.

Hatchling horseshoe crabs look like trilobites.  (OK, I don't recall offhand what the fossil evidence is here, but that jives with the morphological tree of life.)

Hatchling lampreys (primitive jawless fish) look like primitive chordates.  That jives.
